Fans of Dean's seminal Curve sound will climb over the bones of Britpop for this record, yet while the muscle and bone of SPC ECO is pure Garcia, their spirit is that of frontwoman Rose Berlin, who supplants Curve's existential angst with her very own brand of ethereal breathiness, as if early Cocteaus had embraced the thunder of Shriekback and Wire, and maybe chucked in the psychedelic sonic abilities of Will Sergeant for good measure. Ever the maverick soundscaper, Dean has reanimated his signature sound for the new millennium with a vengeance. Often imitated but never rivalled.
